Background:

As part of the Ancient Woodland Restoration Project, the Woodland Trust is collaborating with the Deer Initiative to provide Deer Awareness events to Woodland Owners, Forestry Agents and Woodland Trust staff.

The programme will focus on:

Overview of impacts caused by: UK deer species, other mammals, and the compounding effects of tree diseases.

Deer Impact Surveys: an introduction to activity and impact indicators, conducting surveys, recording and interpreting results.  Preparation for the site visit. Introduction to the MyForest application.

Deer Population Dynamics and Monitoring: factors driving population density and their relationship to habitats. Counting deer versus indirect methods of monitoring population change. Recording and interpreting data to support Adaptive Management.

Adaptive Management: planning and adapting deer management over time.  Cull planning and indicators of success. Meeting site management objectives.

Field Visit: examples of deer impact indicators. Discuss the logistics of deer management including stalker safety and efficiency.  Discuss health and safety and legislative issues as they affect field operations. 

Please ensure that you bring suitable footwear and 
outdoor clothing for the site visit.
Lunch will be provided on the day.
